The Ian Engelmann Singers was founded in 1970 by the late Ian Engelmann, a BBC television producer. A mixed voice choir of about 15 singers, the choir has members of all ages and is directed by John Tudhope. It rehearses on Monday evenings in Walton-on-Thames.
The IES has a broad repertoire, enjoying a range of a capella music, early and contemporary, sacred and secular, serious and light. The choir has performed Bach's St. John Passion with a Baroque orchestra and professional soloists.
One of the many strengths of the choir is the warmth and close friendship of its members, illustrated by the continuing presence of several of the choir's founding singers. We have enjoyed several very successful choir tours together, singing on the island of Alderney and in a variety of towns and villages in Umbria, Italy.
There are three regular concerts: Christmas, Spring and Summer, with occasional concerts in Autumn. As well as these, the choir is often invited to give performances at venues throughout Surrey to raise money for charities, for weddings, formal dinners and at music festivals.
